Bilgin Yachts Unveils M/Y Tamasha: A 52-Meter Evolution of the 170 Series

The Eastern Mediterranean superyacht sector witnessed a major development this October as Bilgin Yachts announced the launch of M/Y Tamasha. As the first unit of the shipyard’s 52-meter 170 series, this vessel represents a strategic expansion for the Istanbul-based builder. The launch follows closely on the heels of the Monaco Yacht Show, where the brand displayed the 50-meter M/Y Camila, effectively showcasing the breadth of their current production capabilities within a single season.

The launch operation took place at the West Istanbul Marina, the location of the shipyard's headquarters. This event marks the transition of the vessel from heavy construction to the final outfitting phase. According to the shipyard, the 52-meter platform is not merely an addition to the fleet but a central pillar of their future growth, designed to offer the volume and amenities of larger superyachts while maintaining a manageable operational footprint.

A Departure in Design and Aesthetics

M/Y Tamasha immediately sets herself apart from her predecessors through a specific aesthetic choice: a light brown hull. This color scheme is a first for Bilgin Yachts and was selected to establish an organic visual relationship with the sea. Emrecan Özgün of Unique Yacht Design, who helmed the exterior styling and naval architecture, noted that the aim was to create a vessel that functions as a personal statement. The profile is described as masculine and athletic, featuring a more aggressive bow structure than previous models in the shipyard's portfolio.

The design philosophy extends beyond pure aesthetics to functional lifestyle integration. The exterior lines are engineered to maximize outdoor living spaces, ensuring that the connection to the marine environment remains uninterrupted. This approach caters to a modern ownership style that prioritizes social interaction and open-air entertainment over traditional, enclosed formality.

Interior Architecture by Hot Lab

The interior spaces of Tamasha are the work of the Milan-based studio Hot Lab. Known for their "architecture for voyagers" philosophy, the studio has created a layout that emphasizes spatial generosity. By capitalizing on the vessel's substantial volume, the design team introduced expansive areas that benefit from maximized natural light.

The interior concept is defined by contemporary elegance. The goal was to manufacture a sanctuary that feels both sophisticated and comfortable, avoiding the rigidity often found in formal yacht interiors. The layout prioritizes seamless flow, allowing crew and guests to move through the vessel intuitively. This is particularly evident in the transition zones between the interior salons and the exterior decks, which are designed to function as a singular, cohesive social environment.

Engineering the 500 GT Threshold

One of the most critical technical achievements of M/Y Tamasha is her adherence to the sub-500 gross tonnage (GT) regulation while stretching to a length overall of 52 meters. Keeping a yacht of this length under 499 GT requires rigorous engineering and weight management. It allows the owner to benefit from less onerous regulatory frameworks and lower operational costs compared to vessels exceeding this volume threshold.

Built on a displacement hull configuration, Tamasha utilizes a steel hull for durability and seakeeping, mated to an aluminum superstructure to reduce top weight and improve stability. The vessel has a beam of 9.25 meters and a draft of 2.60 meters at full load.

Propulsion is provided by twin main engines compliant with CAT IMO Tier 2 standards. These power plants deliver a maximum speed of 16 knots. More importantly for global cruising, the yacht is optimized for efficiency at 10 knots, where she achieves a range of approximately 5,000 nautical miles. This transoceanic range is supported by a fuel capacity of 55,000 liters and a fresh water capacity of 11,000 liters, making Tamasha a true blue-water explorer capable of extended periods of autonomy.

The 170 Series vs. M/Y Camila

The launch of Tamasha provides an opportunity to analyze Bilgin’s offering by comparing her with the recently showcased M/Y Camila. While Tamasha leads the 52-meter 170 series, Camila represents the 50-meter platform, measuring 49.95 meters in length. Both vessels share the design DNA of Unique Yacht Design and Hot Lab, yet they possess distinct operational characteristics tailored to their specific engineering packages.

M/Y Camila is powered by twin CAT C32 engines, each generating 1,193 kW. This setup allows the slightly smaller vessel to reach a top speed of 17 knots, one knot faster than her larger sister. However, both yachts share the same 55,000-liter fuel capacity and the 5,000-nautical-mile range at cruising speed, indicating a standardized approach to long-range performance across the fleet.

Accommodation on Camila is configured for 12 guests, a standard likely mirrored in Tamasha, though specific layout details for the new flagship remain part of the final reveal. Both vessels operate with steel hulls and aluminum superstructures, reinforcing the shipyard’s preference for this robust material combination over composite alternatives for yachts in this size range.

Collaborative Production and Vertical Integration

The successful realization of Tamasha highlights the operational strengths of Bilgin Yachts. The shipyard is a fifth-generation family-run business that has retained a boutique approach despite its scale. A key differentiator for Bilgin is its high degree of vertical integration. With over 900 craftsmen employed, the company performs approximately 90 percent of the construction work in-house.

This internal capability spans five facilities covering more than 79,450 square meters. It includes specialized workshops for marine furniture, hydraulics, stainless steel fabrication, and upholstery. This control over the supply chain allowed the team to maintain high standards of proficiency throughout the build of Tamasha. Nikolay Kondratiev, the owner’s representative, highlighted this aspect, noting the reliability of the management and the skill of the workforce as primary factors in the project's success.

Market Trajectory and Future Outlook

The launch of Tamasha is a leading indicator of the shipyard's future direction. The market response to the 52-meter series has been robust, with six additional hulls currently in various stages of production. This suggests that Bilgin has successfully identified a "sweet spot" in the market—owners looking for the prestige and capability of a 50-meter-plus vessel without the regulatory complexities of high-volume megayachts.

However, the shipyard’s ambitions extend well beyond this series. The current order book includes significantly larger projects, such as an 86-meter yacht and a separate 80-meter project. Furthermore, the company is developing four units of a new 53-meter model, hinting at a diversification of their mid-range offerings.

As M/Y Tamasha undergoes her final outfitting at West Istanbul Marina, she stands as physical proof of the Turkish yachting industry's rising prominence. Her delivery will mark the completion of a complex design and engineering cycle, offering a new benchmark for the 170 series.
