Royal Huisman Unveils SKY: The 81m Sloop Ready to Claim the World’s Tallest Mast Record

The landscape of large-scale sailing yachts is set to be redefined by a project that combines proven engineering with unprecedented vertical scale. Royal Huisman has officially unveiled SKY, a concept for an 81-meter (264-foot) flybridge sloop that presents a rare proposition in the superyacht market. While the length of the vessel places it firmly in the upper echelon of the global fleet, it is the rig that demands immediate attention. Crowned by a carbon rig from Rondal, SKY boasts an air draft of 93 meters (305 feet), a height that equals the towering height of the Statue of Liberty from ground to torch.

This announcement is not merely a design study but a fully realized engineering package. Royal Huisman has confirmed that the design and the majority of the engineering are already completed, categorizing SKY as "ready to build". This strategic preparation allows for a delivery timeline that significantly undercuts the industry standard for custom vessels of this magnitude.

The "Ready to Build" Advantage

In the ultra-high-net-worth sector, time is often the most valuable asset. Customarily, a project of this size involves a process spanning six or more years, beginning with architect briefings and moving through multiple design iterations before delivery. SKY circumvents the initial phases of this cycle because challenges have been identified, addressed, and solved, and most production engineering is done.

By resolving the design, naval architecture, and engineering challenges beforehand, Royal Huisman offers a projected delivery of Spring 2030. This groundwork saves significant development time and creates a unique opportunity for an owner who decides to proceed. CEO Peter Naeyé notes that while the majority of production engineering is done, the layout and style remain open to personalization. This approach provides a visionary owner the benefits of a full custom build without the extended lead times usually associated with prototype development.

Naval Architecture and Exterior Design

The project brings together a formidable trio of industry leaders: Royal Huisman, Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design (MMYD), and Winch Design. Malcolm McKeon’s studio is responsible for the naval architecture and the contemporary exterior styling. The design brief focused on creating a vessel capable of world cruising with strong sailing performance.

Construction will utilize a full aluminum hull with optimized weight distribution and a lift keel. When paired with the powerful Rondal rig, SKY is engineered to be a true "XXL superyacht" that sails faster than the wind and outpaces motoryachts of similar length.

Despite its massive dimensions, the vessel is designed for maneuverability. The helm stations feature integrated sailing systems and control twin carbon composite rudders, offering the simplicity of a performance sailing yacht under 50 meters. The exterior layout prioritizes the connection to the marine environment. A vast aft beach deck includes an extendible swim platform and a full-beam mid-lazarette with folding platforms on either side, ensuring guests have a close connection to the water. The flybridge and various seating areas allow for open-air living, superb visibility, and protection from the sun.

Sanctuary at Sea: The Interior Concept

Winch Design has been tasked with the interior architecture, creating a space described as an "architectural sanctuary at sea". The interior is inspired by nature, featuring clean, sculptural lines, natural textures, and calm palettes refined with subtle luxury detailing. The design philosophy blurs the boundaries between the interior and the exterior, evoking coastal landscapes through an elevated, architectural lens.

The General Arrangement accommodates ten to twelve guests across an owner’s stateroom and four guest suites. The owner’s full-beam stateroom is a highlight of the accommodation deck, offering direct access to the super large aft beach deck and featuring extra-large hull windows that flood the space with daylight.

The onboard amenities for owners and guests include a midship wellness spa and a watersports center. The interior design is intended to enhance life onboard, from wellness zones and watersports areas to entertainment spaces filled with natural light.

Breaking Records: The Rig and Propulsion

The defining silhouette of SKY is undoubtedly its rig, which will be the world’s tallest sloop rig, topping the current record-holder by about 4 meters (14 feet). Rondal will supply the carbon mast, boom, and Integrated Sailing System necessary to handle the square-top sailplan with safety and ease. This rig will be a defining feature both under sail and at every anchorage.

Beneath the waterline, the propulsion system is equally advanced. The vessel employs electric azimuthing propeller pods (1000kW) powered by four main variable speed generators and a substantial battery bank. This configuration facilitates silent, fumeless, and zero-emission operation, as well as peak-shaving.

The innovative and proven Royal Huisman system architecture holds Lloyd’s “Hybrid Power” certificate. This system will be capable of regenerating energy during sailing. This creates a future-proof platform that addresses the growing demand for eco-friendly operation, especially when compared to XXL motoryachts.

Operational Independence

A common logistical challenge for large sailing yachts is their inability to carry sufficient tenders and toys, often necessitating a separate support vessel. SKY addresses this directly. The yacht is designed to carry a large, 12-meter (39-foot) tender, a dedicated crew/rescue tender, two water scooters, and an extensive assortment of equipment.

The additional equipment includes water sports gear like SeaBobs, bikes, SUP boards, kayaks, and an extensive scuba setup. This wide assortment avoids the need for a separate support vessel. For the crew, the layout provides appropriate quarters, including a captain’s cabin, three officer cabins, and six crew cabins.

Market Implications and Conclusion

The introduction of SKY represents a significant moment for the large sailing yacht sector, challenging the convention that increased scale must come at the cost of sailing performance. The project is truly unique in every aspect, being towering in height, immense in power, and unmistakably head-turning.

By offering a pre-engineered platform with a fixed delivery window of Spring 2030 (subject to confirmation), Royal Huisman is targeting an owner who desires a bespoke and unique supersized sailing yacht but wishes to bypass the multi-year development phase. Developed to explore the far corners of the globe in an eco-friendly way, SKY is ready for an owner who wants to sail the world.
