The historic Lürssen shipyard celebrated a monumental achievement with the launch of the 114.2-metre superyacht, COSMOS. Emerging from the construction hall, the vessel immediately established itself as one of the most significant launches of the year, not only for its impressive scale but for its profoundly unique design and forward-thinking technology. Commissioned by a visionary owner with a passion for global discovery, COSMOS represents a pivotal moment for the German builder, coinciding with its 150th anniversary.
The project is the result of a comprehensive design brief executed by the world-renowned designer Marc Newson, who was responsible for both the striking exterior architecture and the highly anticipated interior. The result is a vessel that breaks decisively from conventional yachting aesthetics, presenting a sleek, sculptural silhouette that is poised to become an instant icon.

An Uninhibited Design Approach
Central to the success of COSMOS is the cohesive and singular vision of Marc Newson. By entrusting the entire design to one creative lead, the owner facilitated an environment where every element, from the grand exterior lines to the smallest interior detail, could be developed in harmony. This holistic approach is a departure from many large custom projects, which often involve separate teams for exterior and interior styling.
"Working with an immensely creative client has enabled rare opportunities to push the boundaries," comments Marc Newson. "Everything from the smallest detail to the silhouette—outside, inside, and everything in between—is our design. We have, therefore, been able to exploit and explore every creative possibility uninhibited."
This creative freedom allowed for what Newson describes as a "joyful, organic evolution," culminating in a design that is both novel and coherent. The exterior is futuristic and elegant, defined by flowing lines and an uninterrupted profile that appears almost monolithic in its purity.
Architectural Marvels in Glass
Perhaps the most defining architectural feature of COSMOS is her extensive and innovative use of glass. Dominating the superstructure is a large, glass-domed private owner’s study, a feature that presented a significant engineering challenge. Lürssen’s engineers developed a custom solution to bend large, thick sections of glass to perfection, ensuring crystal clarity without imperfections. The result is a spectacular perch atop the vessel offering undisturbed 360-degree panoramic vistas.
This private sanctuary is complemented by an adjoining sky terrace, giving the owner a seamless connection between the interior study and an exclusive outdoor space. The theme of transparency continues across the yacht’s six decks. The cabin deck features a continuous band of glass surrounding the entire upper level for uninterrupted views from the guest accommodations. Forward, located beneath the helipad, is another glass-encased observation lounge for guests to take in the approaching scenery.
Aft, an open balcony with a glass balustrade overlooks the main deck, further enhancing the yacht’s connection to its environment. This commitment to glass not only floods the interior with natural light but also reinforces the owner's goal of experiencing the world with minimal obstruction.
Engineered for Global Exploration
COSMOS was conceived and built for a distinct purpose: to serve as a platform for discovering the world. Her naval architecture, developed in-house by Lürssen, equips her for long-range, remote cruising, opening up the possibility of exploring all five of the planet's major oceans and all seven continents.
To achieve this, she is reinforced to Ice Class 1D, enabling her to operate safely in light ice conditions and venture into high-latitude regions that remain inaccessible to most yachts.
The expansive open aft deck is a masterclass in functional design. Its centerpiece is a large swimming pool and Jacuzzi arrangement, surrounded by comfortable seating areas for relaxation. Further aft, the deck incorporates a dry dock, which utilizes a sledge system to launch and retrieve the yacht's largest tender—a critical piece of equipment for exploration and shore excursions.

Pioneering Sustainable Technology
In a bold step towards a more sustainable future for yachting, COSMOS is equipped with a research installation of a methanol fuel cell. This initiative, driven by the owner's commitment to innovation, places the yacht at the forefront of green technology research within the industry.
The system is designed to utilize methanol to produce hydrogen, which is then converted into electricity through the fuel cell. While described as a technologically challenging and complex procedure, this installation will provide invaluable data on the viability and application of methanol as a marine fuel source. It positions COSMOS not merely as a vessel for private enjoyment, but as a testbed for next-generation power solutions.
A Landmark for Lürssen's 150th Anniversary
The launch of COSMOS holds special significance for Lürssen, marking a high point in the shipyard’s 150th year of operation. "This is a rather special project to coincide with our 150th anniversary," says Peter Lürssen. "While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history—COSMOS is undoubtedly one of those yachts."
As she undergoes final outfitting and prepares for sea trials, the superyacht industry will be watching closely. COSMOS is more than just a new yacht; she is a statement of intent, embodying a future where design, exploration, and technology converge in spectacular fashion.
