Southern Wind has officially introduced its latest flagship, the SW123, marking a significant milestone for the Cape Town-based shipyard. As the largest yacht ever built by Southern Wind, the SW123 is set to redefine the world of performance cruising with a perfect fusion of speed, comfort, and versatility.
Penned by renowned naval architects Farr Yacht Design and the esteemed design team at Nauta Design, the SW123 is engineered to be the lightest performance cruiser in its class. It follows Southern Wind’s Smart Custom philosophy, ensuring that owners can personalize their yacht while maintaining a proven structural foundation.
With the first unit already under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2027, the SW123 promises to deliver an unparalleled experience on the water, whether for long-range cruising, regatta competition, or luxury charter.
A Versatile Design for Every Owner’s Vision
One of the defining features of the SW123 is its customizable design platform, allowing owners to tailor their yacht to their specific sailing preferences. Whether the goal is a bluewater cruising yacht, a competitive regatta racer, or a charter-focused superyacht, the SW123 can be optimized to fit the owner’s unique vision.
"The SW123 is based on a versatile design platform that can be adapted to suit her owner’s expectations and intended usage," explains Andrea Micheli, Chief Commercial Officer at Southern Wind. "Whether the preference is for a long-range bluewater cruiser, regatta champion, or successful charter yacht, the SW123 can be optimized to match the design brief of the Owner’s dream yacht."
Following the success of the SW108 Smart Custom, the SW123 offers multiple keel configurations, a choice between different deck layouts (GT or X-Crossover), and a selection of interior styles, ensuring each yacht has a distinct personality.
A Hull Built for Performance and Stability
At the heart of the SW123’s performance capabilities lies its state-of-the-art hull design. Developed in collaboration with Farr Yacht Design, the yacht’s hull features a wide aft section and transom, increasing both interior volume and deck space without compromising balance and agility.
"The generously wide aft sections and transom of the SW123 allow for more internal volume and deck area," notes Jim Schmicker of Farr Yacht Design. "This ample width is carefully balanced with extra volume in the forward sections to ensure the yacht remains in control with a level fore-and-aft trim when sailing at typical upwind heel angles."
To enhance maneuverability, the SW123 comes with a twin-rudder configuration, paired with either a lifting or telescopic keel that reduces draft to just 3.85 meters when raised—ideal for accessing shallow cruising grounds.
A Revolutionary Aft and Beach Club Concept
One of the most exciting aspects of the SW123 is its innovative aft design, offering two distinct transom configurations to suit different lifestyles:
- Twin-Fold Transom System – Transforms the aft section into a beach club and a tender/toy garage, capable of storing a 5.35-meter premium tender like the Castoldi Jet Tender 17 or the Williams Sportjet 540.
- Seaside Lounge Transom – Expands the beach club area and swim platform, creating a relaxed, open-air lounge space right at the water’s edge.
This versatility in aft design enhances the yacht’s connection with the sea, allowing owners to fully embrace the ocean lifestyle.
A Luxury Interior with Smart Customization
The SW123 continues Southern Wind’s tradition of delivering spacious, elegant, and highly customizable interiors. Staying true to the Smart Custom philosophy, the yacht’s interior can be configured to maximize guest comfort while maintaining a functional layout for the crew.
The standard guest configuration includes four luxurious cabins, with the flexibility to convert one into an onboard gym, sauna, or private office. A large saloon seamlessly integrates the living, dining, and lounge areas, providing a welcoming space for socializing and relaxation. The main saloon can accommodate up to ten guests, featuring plush sofas and an eight-to-ten-seat dining table.
For the crew, the SW123 offers a thoughtfully designed quarters, with three ensuite cabins to accommodate five to six members, ensuring efficient onboard service and operations.
Advanced Propulsion for a Sustainable Future
In line with modern sustainability trends, the SW123 will be available with two propulsion options:
- IMO Tier III Compliant Diesel Propulsion – A traditional and reliable setup for long-distance cruising.
- Serial Hybrid Power and Propulsion System – A high-voltage energy storage system, providing a more eco-friendly cruising experience with reduced emissions and improved fuel efficiency.
This forward-thinking approach ensures that owners can enjoy both performance and environmental responsibility without compromise.
A Glimpse into the Future: The First SW123 Under Construction
