Oceanco Launches 111m Leviathan: A Superyacht Redefining Onboard Operations

The Dutch shipyard Oceanco has once again asserted its position at the forefront of custom yacht building with the launch of the 111-meter (364-foot) superyacht Leviathan. Emerging from the Alblasserdam facilities, the vessel, formerly known as project Y722, presents a striking profile and a design philosophy that challenges industry conventions. Billed as a yacht "built with intent, not convention," Leviathan was conceived around a human-centric approach, placing the operational realities of life at sea at the core of its design.

This launch marks a significant moment, not just for its impressive scale, but for the deliberate intent behind its creation. From its diesel-electric propulsion system to its carefully selected materials, every aspect of Leviathan has been engineered to serve a greater purpose, prioritizing functionality and the wellbeing of those who live and work aboard.

A New Philosophy in Yachting

At the heart of the Leviathan project is a forward-thinking owner with a deep understanding of maritime operations and a commitment to team building. This vision led to a fundamental shift in the development process. Uniquely, the crew were invited to participate from the earliest stages, not merely as future operators but as integral consultants whose insights would shape a more intelligent and efficient vessel.

This collaborative approach focused on a critical re-evaluation of onboard workflow. The goal was not simply to reduce the effort required for maintenance, but to redirect that human effort toward higher-value activities. By minimizing time spent on repetitive, low-impact tasks, the crew is empowered to enhance the guest experience, support potential scientific missions, or manage complex logistical operations with greater focus and precision.

This philosophy signals a move away from designing yachts solely around guest areas and toward a more holistic, ecosystem-based model where operational excellence directly translates to a superior onboard experience for everyone.

Design and Collaboration

Leviathan is the product of a consortium of industry leaders, each contributing specialized expertise to realize the owner's distinct vision. The powerful exterior lines were penned in-house by Oceanco, who also collaborated with Lateral Naval Architects on the sophisticated naval architecture. The yacht's interiors, which are anticipated to reflect the same purposeful ethos, are the work of the renowned Mark Berryman Design.

A United Team

Throughout the build, the owner remained actively involved, working closely with their technical representatives at YTMC and the team at Y.CO to ensure the project remained true to its founding principles. This synergy between owner, builder, designers, and crew is a testament to the project's collaborative spirit.

In a remarkable tribute to this collective effort, a glass panel engraved with the names of more than 2,000 individuals involved in the yacht's construction has been installed in the main staircase. This permanent feature serves as a reminder that Leviathan was built by people, for people.

Engineering Intent: Function Over Tradition

The most tangible expression of Leviathan's philosophy is found in its material and system choices. Traditional yacht elements known for their demanding upkeep were intentionally replaced with advanced, durable alternatives that enhance the vessel's aesthetic while reducing the maintenance burden.

Smart Material Choices

Key examples of this forward-thinking approach include:

  • Decks and Rails: Traditional teak decks and polished handrails with wooden cappings have been replaced with modern composite decks and capping rails, which offer superior durability and ease of care.

  • Superstructure: Vast sections of painted superstructure were substituted with full-height glass bulkheads, creating a seamless visual connection to the marine environment while eliminating the need for constant paint maintenance.

  • Interiors: Inside, materials like honed stone and natural wool carpets were selected for their resilience and reduced need for specialized upkeep, allowing crew to focus on hospitality and operations.

These decisions reflect a pragmatic approach to luxury, where true opulence is defined by seamless operation and the freedom to enjoy time at sea without the constant intrusion of routine maintenance.

Industry Voices and Future Outlook

Leaders from the teams behind Leviathan have shared their perspective on the project's significance. "Leviathan represents a new philosophy of yachting—one that places greater purpose at the heart of design, ownership and operations," commented Deniz de Koningh, Project Director at Oceanco. "The owner's vision sets a forward-thinking example of how yachts can be built and used with intent."

Dan Morgan, Managing Director of YTMC, described the vessel as "a sanctuary of comfort where silence meets strength," highlighting its "superb synergy of form and function."

Adding to this, Charlie Birkett, CEO and Co-Founder of Y.CO, noted the yacht’s versatility. "She is not just a high-performance vessel," he stated. "She is a working ecosystem, designed to support everything from world-class hospitality to scientific research."

Leviathan is scheduled to begin sea trials in the coming weeks, where its performance and innovative systems will be put to the test.
