Heesen Delivers 50m Hybrid Superyacht ORION, A New Star in Eco-Conscious Yachting

A New Benchmark in Hybrid Yachting

The Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts has announced the successful delivery of YN 20750, the 50-metre hybrid superyacht now christened ORION. This delivery marks a significant moment for the Oss-based builder, representing its third launch of 2025 and reinforcing its position as a leader in high-performance, eco-friendly yacht construction.

Fresh from intensive sea trials in the challenging conditions of the North Sea, ORION performed flawlessly, exceeding all expectations and underscoring Heesen's renown for precision engineering and impeccable build quality. The yacht stands as a testament to the yard's commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and environmental responsibility within the superyacht sector.

Design and Collaboration: A Fusion of Expertise

ORION's striking exterior lines were penned by the acclaimed Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. The design is characterized by a powerful, near-vertical bow and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, which create a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding seascape by flooding the living spaces with natural light.

The interior is the result of a close collaboration between Heesen, the owner’s team, and the celebrated Cristiano Gatto Design. Gatto’s team developed a sophisticated and luxurious canvas, allowing the owner to imprint their personal style through a bespoke selection of loose furniture. The craftsmanship is a showcase of Dutch excellence, featuring a complex palette of over 37 different materials, including fine Italian marbles, high-gloss woods, and intricately woven leather.

Accommodating twelve guests across six staterooms, the 499 GT interior volume is both spacious and intelligently laid out. The configuration includes a generous owner's stateroom on the main deck and a full-beam VIP suite, ensuring exceptional comfort for all aboard.

The Heart of Innovation: Hybrid Propulsion and Efficiency

At its core, ORION is a technological powerhouse, representing the third vessel in Heesen’s advanced 50-metre series featuring a lightweight, all-aluminium build and the revolutionary Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). The sophisticated naval architecture, developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, is a cornerstone of the yacht's exceptional performance.

"Our expertise in lightweight aluminium construction, combined with the efficiency of the Fast Displacement Hull Form and the advanced hybrid propulsion system make ORION an exceptional yacht," stated Peter van der Zanden, Head of Engineering at Heesen Yachts.

The yacht’s hybrid system offers unparalleled flexibility and efficiency. In conventional diesel mode, she is powered by two IMO III-compliant MTU 12V 2000 M61 engines, achieving a top speed of 16.3 knots. In this mode, her transatlantic range is an impressive 3,750 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots, with a fuel consumption of just 98 litres per hour.

The true innovation lies in her hybrid capabilities. The system allows for silent cruising at speeds up to 10 knots, with fuel consumption dropping to a mere 45 litres per hour. This near-silent electric mode not only dramatically reduces emissions and fuel costs but also provides a serene onboard experience, allowing guests to enjoy the tranquility of their surroundings without the intrusion of engine noise.

Ready for the World's Oceans

Versatility was a key consideration in ORION's design. With a shallow draft of just 2.15 metres (7' 1"), she is perfectly suited for exploring a wide array of cruising grounds, from the crystalline shallow waters of the Bahamas to the classic ports of the Mediterranean.

The delivery of ORION was hailed as a proud achievement by all involved. Ruud van der Stroom of Heesen commented, "This yacht perfectly encapsulates our DNA: precision Dutch engineering, innovative hybrid technology, and the ability to deliver a high-quality product through dedicated collaboration."

Broker Anton Foord of Ocean Independence, which represented the owner, added, “The delivery of ORION marks an incredibly proud milestone... As we look ahead, it’s exciting to envision the enjoyment she will bring to her owner and guests."

Entering the Charter Market

Following her delivery, ORION will join the prestigious charter fleet of Ocean Independence, offering select clients the unique opportunity to experience her blend of performance, luxury, and silent cruising. Her availability opens a new chapter for those seeking a charter experience defined by cutting-edge technology and environmental sensitivity, all within a vessel of unmistakable Northern European quality.
