SwissChauffeur: Luxury Private Transfers Across Switzerland

Snow was falling lightly over Ambri when our chauffeur arrived. It was just before eleven in the morning, the temperature hovering above freezing, and we had a four o’clock appointment waiting for us several hours away in Engelberg.

We had been staying with family near Airolo, in the Ticino region, and had arranged for SwissChauffeur to collect us from a house close to the chapel in Ambri, Quinto. By the time we stepped outside, five minutes before the agreed pickup, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class was already there.

There were four of us, each traveling with close to two large pieces of luggage, so space mattered. Switzerland, of course, hardly lacks good ways to travel. Its public transport system is excellent, and the road network is equally impressive. Winter, however, adds another layer. Moving between Alpine resorts with a tight schedule and substantial luggage is not quite the same as traveling light between cities. Add freezing mornings, mountain passes and the possibility of changing weather, and self-driving becomes less appealing.

That was a large part of the reason we chose a chauffeur service for this itinerary.

Our first transfer took us from Ambri to Kempinski Palace Engelberg, where we were staying while reviewing Titlis. The driving itself was worth paying attention to.

On long Alpine roads, especially through extended curves and mountain sections, a good chauffeur is easy to recognize. There were no abrupt steering corrections, sudden accelerations or hard braking. The car was carried through bends at a measured pace, reducing lateral movement inside the cabin. Both hands stayed steadily on the wheel, and the overall rhythm of the drive remained composed. It made a noticeable difference over several hours on the road.

The transfer from Engelberg to St. Moritz was the most memorable of the journey. SwissChauffeur suggested the scenic route through Julierpass, where the road opens into a remarkable winter landscape of snowfields and high mountains. From the elevated seating position of the V-Class, with its broad windows and panoramic roof, we had an uninterrupted view of it all.

That is one of the pleasures of being driven through the Alps. Instead of watching the road, checking the route or thinking about the next turn, you can simply look outside.
Our schedule during the trip was tight, with hotel arrivals, meetings and resort reviews all fixed to particular times. On every transfer, SwissChauffeur was punctual.
