The imposing vessel has officially departed from the company’s dedicated shipbuilding facility in Antalya, Turkey, and is currently en route to support the Owner’s highly customized private yachting programme.
Built specifically for her Owner as a purposeful, strategic extension of an existing fleet, RAFTER represents a growing trend in the ultra-high-net-worth maritime market: the utilization of dedicated support vessels. In the superyacht industry, a "Yacht Support" vessel—often referred to colloquially as a shadow vessel or shadow boat—operates in tandem with a primary luxury "mother yacht." Its primary function is to carry heavy logistical burdens, additional crew, specialized equipment, and large tenders, thereby freeing up valuable premium space on the main superyacht for pure guest enjoyment.

Despite her rugged, utilitarian exterior profile, the interior accommodations of RAFTER are deeply focused on luxury and comfort. On board, the vessel is configured to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests. To manage the vessel's operations and tend to the guests, there are dedicated quarters for 10 crew members plus the Captain.
The interior spaces were designed in-house by Damen Yachting, directly reflecting the Owner’s personal style. Moving away from purely minimalist or highly modern nautical trends, the interior decor combines a sense of timeless elegance with distinct Old English influences, creating a warm, inviting, and highly personalized environment for family members and guests to retreat to after a day of water-based activities.

The successful execution of such a highly specialized vessel requires deep collaboration between the shipyard and the client's management team. Rob Dolling, acting as the Owner’s Representative throughout the project, reflected on the cohesive nature of this build.
“From the outset, there was a clear vision for how the Owner wanted to use YS53 RAFTER and the role she would play within the fleet,” stated Dolling. He emphasized that by working closely together with Damen Yachting, the team was able to translate those exact wishes into a vessel that is highly functional, deeply personal, and closely aligned with the Owner’s extensive cruising programme.
Dolling further highlighted the efficiency of the construction process. “The collaboration was constructive and efficient throughout the build, which was especially important given the timeframe,” he noted. “It is rewarding to see RAFTER ready to support the Owner, family and crew exactly as intended”.
Uncompromising Operational Flexibility and Deck Capacity
The true value of a Yacht Support vessel lies in its deck capabilities and engineering robust nature. The 53-metre platform of RAFTER offers an expansive area of more than 200 square metres of open Main Deck space. This vast, configurable area is precisely engineered to act as a staging ground for a vast array of waterborne assets.
This reinforced deck space provides a highly flexible area specifically meant for the storage and deployment of large tenders, recreational water toys, and heavy specialist equipment that would otherwise clutter a traditional luxury superyacht.
To safely and efficiently manage these assets, RAFTER is equipped with a heavy-duty 15-tonne deck crane. This massive lifting capacity easily supports the handling of large, enclosed limousine tenders, heavy-duty rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), or even personal submersibles. Furthermore, expanding the vessel's multi-domain capabilities, the reinforced aft deck allows for Touch & Go helicopter operations, facilitating seamless aerial transfers for the Owner and guests regardless of the mother yacht's immediate location.
The Science of the Axe Bow
From a naval architecture standpoint, RAFTER boasts Damen Yachting's highly recognizable and signature "axe bow". In advanced naval architecture, an axe bow features a vertically straight, axe-like stem that is deep and narrow. Unlike a traditional flared bow that rides up and over waves—which can cause violent pitching and slamming—the axe bow is designed to efficiently slice directly through the water. This specific hydrodynamic design significantly reduces vertical acceleration, providing an incredibly smooth performance and superior seakeeping ability in a wide range of challenging sea conditions.
