PUMA led the fleet on the rounding of the iconic Fastnet Rock at 1031 UTC on Monday, marking the final 150 nautical mile stretch to the finish at Galway, Ireland, where the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 race will be decided.

Telefónica smoked their rivals off the start line and led out into open water as the Volvo Ocean Race fleet set out on the final offshore leg of the 2011-12 event on Sunday -- with Groupama just needing a top-four finish to close out victory.

Hometown heroes Groupama completed a last-gasp win in the Bretagne In-Port Race in Lorient on Saturday to take a big step towards overall victory in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12.

A heartbroken Iker Martínez/ESP saw his dreams of a fourth leg win evaporate overnight when during the much anticipated and much feared gybe towards the finish in Lorient, Telefónica damaged their port rudder. As Telefónica limp carefully towards France, Groupama (Franck Cammas/FRA) have regained the lead and are smoking towards a leg win in in their home port of Lorient, at around 1100 GMT today.

Overnight the deep Atlantic depression delivered all that it promised and more as the fleet achieved speeds of 30 knots, allowing leg leaders Telefónica (Iker Martínez/ESP) to achieve a 24-hour run of 540 nautical miles. Groupama, meanwhile, suffered a glitch which saw them lose 20 miles and two places as they battled to shorten sail in the worst of the storm.

Telefónica (Iker Martínez/ESP) is leading the charge not only towards the finish of Leg 8 in Lorient on Friday but straight towards the centre of a particularly nasty north-Atlantic depression. Groupama (Franck Cammas/FRA) faltered briefly, allowing PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG (Ken Read/USA) and CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand (Chris Nicholson/AUS) to overtake.

In an exciting duel this morning, at 0456 GMT Telefónica (Iker Martínez/ESP) led Groupama (Franck Cammas/FRA) by three minutes as they rounded the turning point at the Azores island of São Miguel on Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race. Now the leaders are battening down the hatches to tough it out in winds of 40 knots and a huge sea state for the final 1,000-mile push to the finish in Lorient, France.
